Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Alcyon Center?

We are a small, practicing community grounded in contemplative life. We focus on teaching, training and offering a place for the emerging conversations about cultural transformation and healing. Revering and revealing the sacred in our world is the aim at the heart of Alcyon work and study. We become community and take up what is needed to create centers that can hold — in ourselves and for the renewal of culture

Where is Alcyon?

We are located on a quiet cove on the western side of Mount Desert Island, Maine, USA, home of Acadia National Park. We are a 35-minute drive from Ellsworth, ME; 3 ½ hours from Portland, ME; and 5 hours from Boston, MA. We send directions to guests after they register for programs.

Who visits Alcyon?

Guests come here, of course, for their own personal reasons, but most are seeking:

  • training in contemplative spiritual practices as a response to these tumultuous times;

  • deepening of inner lives by working with the presence of Silence;

  • strengthening relationships with the natural world.

Tell me about the Alcyon campus

Set on five wooded acres on tidal Seal Cove on Mount Desert Island, the Center includes the main house, a cedar log cabin, and outbuildings on the cove.

What does “Alcyon” mean?

Alcyon (AL-see-yon) is the Latin name for the Kingfisher, a bird who lives in the cove here. You can read about our origins and the myth that inspires our name here.

How do I register for a course?

It's easy! Each program description has registration button along with the course/event/retreat description.

What if I cannot afford a program?

Program costs reflect what we need to maintain and develop the Center. If you have financial limitations, please email us about our student and work programs and alternative donations. We will work together to find a way for you to come.

How can I experience Alcyon as a day visitor?

Visitors are welcome to walk the labyrinth, visit the Cove, take part in quiet days or Soul Friends or bible reflections - or any of our ongoing community programs.
